A German woman named Rita Ebel (62), a wheelchair user, created an unusual alternative for people who, like her, cannot move around easily because of barriers in society. The initiative consists of building ramps made from hundreds of LEGO pieces.
Ebel, who has used a wheelchair since an accident when she was 25, said that for her this is an awareness-raising initiative because everyone should be able to travel without barriers. She spends two hours or more with her husband gluing LEGO pieces together, using up to eight bottles of glue to ensure that the custom-made ramps are effective.
These ramps have become a kind of tourist attraction in the city, standing out not only because of the material from which they are made but also because of their striking colors. Both local shopkeepers and the owners of businesses where the ramps have been installed are delighted with the idea.
The greatest difficulty she has encountered is obtaining the material because, as she has explained, the pieces are donated and many families are reluctant to part with these toys. Nevertheless, following the success of the ramps in her hometown, construction instructions have been sent to Austria and Switzerland, and there are plans to implement them in Spain and the United States.
